Best label finish — matte, gloss, soft-touch or no-label look
The best finish depends on the impression you want, and it is usually a lamination choice made at artwork stage, not a different material. Matte reads upscale, low-glare and readable; gloss maximises colour pop for consumer goods; soft-touch gives a velvety premium feel used on beauty and spirits; clear film delivers the disappearing “no-label look”. Spot/reverse UV and foil are accents layered on top of any of these.

How to decide
The factors that actually matter.
Finish is a lamination/coating decision
Gloss, matte and soft-touch are almost always laminate films or coatings applied over the printed face, which means the whole feel of a label changes without touching the base material or the ink. That is why finish is chosen late, at artwork stage, and why one printed design can ship in three different registers — a bright gloss for a value line, a soft-touch matte for the premium tier — changed only by the film laid over it.
Spot UV and reverse UV add contrast
For a tactile, high-impact effect, spot UV lays gloss varnish over selected artwork; reverse UV flips it — a matte laminate across the whole label with gloss hitting only the pattern, so bright artwork stands against a dead-flat ground. Both read especially well on bright-silver BOPP, a signature in beverage and cosmetics, and both are set at artwork stage, because the varnish needs its own layer in the file.
The finish also does a job
A laminate earns its keep twice: it sets the look, and it shields the ink from UV, scuffing, water and oil. That does not make the prettiest finish the toughest one, though. A thin gloss chosen for shelf-pop is no match for a heavy protective overlaminate built for a chemical drum or a summer of sun. Pick the finish for the impression first, then check it also carries the durability the job needs — and where it falls short, add a protective film or topcoat over it.

Matte or gloss labels — which looks more premium?
Matte generally reads more upscale and is easier to read (low glare), which is why premium cosmetics, spirits and wellness brands lean matte. Gloss looks brighter and more energetic, better for colourful consumer goods. Soft-touch is the most premium-feeling of all, adding a velvety texture.
What is the "no-label look"?
A clear film label (clear BOPP) applied to a clear or glass container so the label seems to disappear and the product shows through. It is the modern DTC signature for cosmetics and beverages.
Can I mix matte and gloss on one label?
Yes — a reverse (spot) UV varnish puts glossy artwork over a matte background on the same label, a tactile contrast effect that is especially striking on bright-silver film.
