Varnish?
A liquid coat, not a film. It receives the ink, protects the print, and — in its most striking form — puts glossy artwork against a matte background on the same label.
What it is
A varnish or topcoat is a coating applied to a label, as opposed to a laminate, which is a film. It plays two everyday roles. As a receptive topcoat, it gives a facestock its printability: film stocks such as BOPP and PET are coated so they accept UV, eco-solvent, or flexographic inks. As a protective varnish, it seals the printed layer against light wear.
Because it is a coating, varnish can be applied selectively — only where the design wants it — which opens a set of finishing effects a full laminate cannot.
How reverse UV works
The most striking varnish effect is reverse UV (also called reverse spot UV or matte-gloss contrast UV). The label carries a matte background while selected artwork is coated glossy, producing a tactile, visually arresting contrast between the dull field and the shiny image.
Reverse UV is achievable on coated paper and is especially popular on bright-silver BOPP, where the matte-plus-gloss-silver contrast is a signature look in beverage and cosmetic packaging. It is a coating decision made at artwork stage, not an afterthought.
What it is good for
Printability — the receptive topcoat is what lets a smooth synthetic film hold ink at all. Decorative contrast — reverse UV and spot gloss add perceived value on cosmetics, spirits, and premium food packaging.
Overprint compatibility — if a label must accept post-delivery date codes or lot numbers from an inkjet printer, it needs a receptive coating; BOPP and PE films without an inkjet-receptive topcoat will bead and smear. Specify the overprint method so the right coating is applied.
Trade-offs

Coating is not armour. A protective varnish resists light handling wear, but it is thinner than a laminate film and does not deliver the same outdoor UV and abrasion protection. For genuine outdoor durability, a laminate overcoat is the stronger choice.
Mind the substrate limits. Decorative finishing on coated paper works well — but embossing depth must stay shallow or the paper cracks under the die. As always, a new coating-plus-finish combination should be proofed on the actual substrate before bulk, because coating, ink, and material interact in ways a digital mock-up cannot show.
