GSM & Caliper?

Two numbers that quietly decide whether a label conforms to a curve, feeds through a machine, or lifts at the edges. Buyers ignore them; converters live by them.

What it is

Two related measures describe how heavy and how thick a label construction is. GSM — grams per square metre — is a weight measure, used for facestocks and liners alike (glassine liner, for example, is commonly specified by GSM). Caliper is the physical thickness of the material, quoted in microns (µm) or mils.

They are not interchangeable, but together they set much of a label’s mechanical behaviour: how it conforms, how it feeds, and how it resists edge lift.

Why thickness drives conformability

A label’s stiffness — a product of facestock caliper and adhesive-liner stiffness during application — resists conforming to a curve. On small-diameter or tightly curved containers, a stiffer face lifts at the edges perpendicular to the curve, while a thinner, more conformable face holds.

This is why very small vials and lip-gloss tubes typically use ultra-thin films: reducing caliper lets the label wrap the curve without flagging. Conversely, a rigid film such as PET does not recover from a sharp fold and can leave a permanent white stress line — a caliper-and-material limit, not a defect.

Where the numbers decide the outcome

Liner GSM sets web strength. On high-speed applicators, stepping a glassine liner up in weight adds tensile strength and reduces web breaks; a coated liner adds more still. The liner’s weight is a production-critical number, not an afterthought.

Facestock caliper sets curve behaviour. Share the container diameter relative to the label height with your converter so they can match a facestock stiff enough to run but conformable enough not to lift.

Trade-offs
— what to know

Thickness is where hidden cost lives. When one quote comes in markedly cheaper than another, the gap often sits in gauge — a lighter facestock, a thinner adhesive coat, or a lighter liner — all of which change durability. Before comparing prices, ask both suppliers to state the same facestock weight, adhesive coat weight, and liner caliper so you are comparing like for like.

Heavier is not automatically better. A liner heavy enough to survive a fast line costs more; a face thick enough to feel premium may lift on a tight curve. The right numbers are the ones matched to your surface, your machine, and your run — not the biggest ones.
