
Die-Cutting?
How the sticker gets its shape. Three cuts, one liner, and the single decision that separates a peel-and-stick sheet from a jam-prone mess on a high-speed line.
What it is
Die-cutting is the step that gives a label its outline. A shaped blade — the die — presses through the material so the finished label can be peeled and applied. There are three cut depths, and choosing the wrong one is a common, avoidable error.
Kiss-cut cuts through the face and adhesive only, leaving the liner intact. This creates a protective backing around the design, makes the label easy to peel without touching the artwork, and allows several labels to sit on one sheet. Die-cut (full-cut) cuts through both the material and the liner, following the exact shape of the design — the result is a finished, standalone label with no surrounding waste. Through-cut uses interior cuts to create negative space inside the design so the surface behind shows through.
How it is tooled
Two tooling routes exist, and the economics diverge sharply by volume. Steel-rule dies carry a one-time tooling cost that must be covered regardless of order size; it is quoted separately and amortised over the life of the die. Commonly available standard shapes — rounds, ovals, rectangles, squares — have no tooling cost because the dies already exist.
For lower volumes or prototype shapes, rotary laser die-cutting avoids a physical die entirely, at the cost of slightly slower run speeds and a modest per-unit premium. A truly custom outline is more economical at higher volumes; a standard die-size minimises tooling investment. When ordering a custom shape, confirm the tooling fee up front, who owns the die, and whether it is stored for reorders.
What it is good for
Die-cut individual stickers suit promotional handouts and any product that ships as a standalone shape. Kiss-cut is the choice for sticker packs, planner sheets, and designs with delicate elements that would tear if peeled directly. Through-cut serves decorative applications where negative space is part of the design.
For automatic labelling lines, die-cut depth interacts with the liner: a shallow die that leaves the liner’s fibres intact is preferable to a deep die that scores through it and weakens the web.

Cut depth is a web-strength decision. On high-speed applicators, a die that penetrates too far into the liner robs it of tensile strength at the cut line, and the web breaks under dispensing tension. The production-validated fix is a heavier liner — stepping up glassine weight — or a coated liner for the fastest lines. Both cost more; confirm the trade-off against your run length.
Heat changes the cut. In hot weather the adhesive softens, and stripping the waste matrix (the surrounding lattice removed after cutting) becomes difficult — the matrix tears or leaves residue on the liner. Scheduling cutting for cooler hours, air-conditioning the die area, and running slower all help. Expect slightly longer die-cutting lead times when ordering in summer.
