Euphora
Problem Nº 10 of 10
§ Field Problem · Nº 10 For Curved Surfaces

“I need a label that
wraps the shoulder.

Curved-surface failure is conformability failure. The substrate’s ability to stretch and follow the contour without lifting at the edges. Most edge-lift complaints trace to using the wrong substrate for the actual curve.

The Euphora scale

Levels,
measured not marketed.

Manufacturers love absolute claims. We made a scale because “for curved surfaces” means different things in different jobs. Pick the level your job actually requires.

0
Flat only
Standard substrates. Lifts on any curve over a few degrees.

Materials at this level

Most paper substrates
1
Gentle curve
Up to 10° tangent. Works on large-radius surfaces (boxes, jars).

Materials at this level

Most labelling substrates
2
Moderate curve
Up to 45° tangent. Standard bottle wraps, jars.

Materials at this level

BOPP, standard Vinyl
3
Tight curve
90° wrap, small-radius bottles (5–10 cm diameter).

Materials at this level

Cast Vinyl, conformable BOPP
4
Compound curve
Multi-axis curves, shouldered bottles, automotive panels.

Materials at this level

Premium Cast Vinyl
5
Extreme conformability
Compound curves with deep recesses, complex industrial shapes.

Materials at this level

Stretch Cast Vinyl, vehicle-wrap grade

Field Notes

Questions we
get most weeks.

Q. 01
Why does my label keep lifting at the shoulder?
The radius of the shoulder exceeds the substrate’s conformability. Step up to cast vinyl, or redesign the label to avoid the curve.
Q. 02
Can I use BOPP on cosmetic bottles with shoulders?
For gentle shoulders (large radius), yes. For tight shoulders or shouldered serum bottles, specify cast vinyl — BOPP creates edge lift.
Q. 03
How do I apply labels to compound curves?
Heat-application: warm the substrate to 45–60 °C, apply slowly, use a squeegee to expel air. For deep curves, specify stretch cast vinyl.
Q. 04
What about flexible squeeze bottles (HDPE)?
Compound surface plus low-energy substrate — specify high-tack adhesive on cast vinyl. Standard adhesives won’t bond.
