How to design a product label (bleed, die line & safe area)

Set up label artwork with three zones: a bleed (about 3 mm / 1/8 inch of background extended past the cut line so trimming never leaves a white edge), the die line (the cut outline, on its own non-printing layer), and a safe area (keep text and logos ~3 mm inside the cut). Build the file in CMYK, not RGB — and for cosmetics, list ingredients in INCI names.

A print-ready label file carries three lines most people never think to draw, and a clean label depends on all three. A die-cutter does not trace your artwork to the exact pixel: the blade lands a fraction of a millimetre off every pass, so the file has to be built for that wobble rather than for a perfect cut. Bleed, the die line, and the safe area are how you build for it.

Step by step

    Set the trim size and die line

    The die line is the vector outline where the label is cut. Put it on its own layer — it guides the cut and does not print.

    Add bleed

    Extend background colour and imagery about 3 mm (roughly 1/8 inch) beyond the cut line, so the tolerance in die-cutting never leaves an unwanted white edge.

    Keep a safe area

    Hold text, logos and barcodes about 3 mm inside the cut line, so nothing important is trimmed off.

    Build in CMYK

    Label artwork must be built in CMYK, not on-screen RGB, to print accurately. Use Pantone spot colours where an exact brand colour matters.

    Add the required content

    Include everything the market mandates — for cosmetics, ingredients in INCI names by descending weight; for food and retail, the product identity, net contents and any barcode.

Three zones, and the tolerance they hide

Start with the die line: the vector outline where the label is actually cut, drawn on its own non-printing layer so the press knows exactly where the blade goes. Around it, extend every background colour and image about 3 mm (roughly 1/8 inch) past that line — the bleed. When the blade lands a hair outside the line, it cuts through printed colour instead of leaving a bare white sliver.

Then pull the other way. Hold text, logos and barcodes about 3 mm inside the line, in the safe area, so a blade landing a hair inside never clips them. Bleed and safe area are the same few millimetres of insurance pointed in opposite directions, and both exist for one reason: the cut is never exactly on the line.

Where a good-looking file still fails at the press

Two files pass on screen and fail on the press. The first is colour space: monitors show RGB, presses print CMYK, and a file left in RGB shifts on output, so the vivid screen blue lands muddy. Build in CMYK from the start, and name a Pantone spot colour where a brand colour has to be exact.

The second is the barcode. It needs a clear quiet zone around it and a minimum size to scan, so it cannot be shrunk to fit the layout or crowded into the safe-area edge — a code that fails verification gets a shipment turned away at the retailer’s dock. And on a regulated product, the mandatory content (INCI names for cosmetics; allergens and net weight for food) is the brand owner’s to get right, not the printer’s.

Good to know

  • Confirm the exact bleed with your printer — some ask for 1/16 inch, most for 1/8 inch.
  • A barcode needs quiet space around it and a minimum print grade to scan reliably — do not shrink it into the safe-area edge.

Common questions

How much bleed does a label need?

About 3 mm — roughly 1/8 inch — of background extended past the cut line, so die-cut tolerance never leaves a white edge. Confirm the exact figure with your printer, as some use 1/16 inch.

Why must label artwork be in CMYK?

Screens display in RGB but presses print in CMYK. Building in CMYK from the start avoids the colour shift that happens when an RGB file is converted for print.
