When to pick which
The decision, by use case.
- →The product is premium DTC cosmetics or beverage and the brand wants the “no-label-look” on a clear bottle.
- →The label faces frequent water, oil, or refrigeration.
- →You need full transparency — clear BOPP on a clear bottle.
- →Long-term shelf stability matters more than recyclability.
- →The brand is craft, sustainable, or roastery/brewery-positioned.
- →The packaging is certified compostable or recyclable as a brand commitment.
- →You want a tactile, warm, hand-made feel — buyers describe Kraft as “trustworthy”.
- →Hot-foil overprint (gold, copper) is part of the design.
- →Cost matters and the product is short-life (coffee bag, candle, soap).
Common questions
Answered straight.
Is Kraft paper waterproof?
No — uncoated Kraft is only Level 1/5 waterproof. It’s for craft, short-life dry goods like coffee bags, candles and soap. For water, oil or refrigeration, use BOPP (Level 5 waterproof) or a coated film.
Which is more sustainable, BOPP or Kraft?
Kraft — it’s curbside-recyclable and compostable when uncoated. BOPP is mixed-plastic with poor recyclability. If a sustainability story is the brand’s promise, Kraft is the honest choice.
Can I put a Kraft label on a cosmetic or bathroom product?
Not recommended — uncoated Kraft disintegrates within a few months of moisture and oil. Use BOPP for beverage, bathroom or refrigerated products; save Kraft for dry, short-life craft goods.
Editor’s verdict
These two materials don’t compete on specs — they compete on brand signal. BOPP says premium, clean, scientific. Kraft says craft, honest, hand-made. The smartest brands pick the material that matches the story they’re telling, not the durability spec sheet. The mistake: putting clear BOPP on a coffee roaster bag (looks sterile, contradicts the story) or putting Kraft on a serum bottle (the label disintegrates in three months in the bathroom).
