The best outdoor label depends on how many years it must survive, and the answer is a ladder. PET film lasts ~3–5 years; cast PVC under a UV laminate ~5–7 years; high-performance PET with a fluoropolymer laminate over 10 years. Whatever the facestock, pair it with a UV-stable acrylic adhesive — never rubber, which fails outdoors in 1–2 years. Outdoor life is a system, not a facestock
How long a label survives outdoors depends on facestock, adhesive, ink, finish and location (UV, heat, humidity). A rough ladder: unprotected coated paper under 6 months; PET ~3–5 years; cast PVC plus UV laminate ~5–7 years; high-performance PET with a fluoropolymer laminate over 10 years. A UV overlaminate is what carries the mid and top tiers.
Acrylic adhesive, always — never rubber
Rubber adhesive ages badly under UV and heat (typically under 1–2 years outdoors) and is prone to solvent attack. Acrylic resists UV, chemicals and heat with 3–10 years of outdoor life. For anything outdoor, long-term or chemically exposed, specify acrylic.
How outdoor life is tested
Accelerated aging uses ASTM G154 (fluorescent UV) or G155 (xenon-arc) to model years of exposure in days; the real-world field benchmark is 3 years at 45° facing south in Arizona or Florida, the harshest US UV. When a supplier quotes an outdoor-life number, ask which test it comes from.
