Hot-foil stamping

how the metallic finish is made

§ 01 · The short version

Hot-stamp foil is a stack: PET carrier, release layer, colored layer, vacuum-deposited aluminum, and a heat-activated adhesive. A heated metal die (120–180°C) presses the foil onto the stock; heat activates the size and vaporizes the release, transferring the metal and color layers, which set on cooling as the carrier peels away. Three parameters are tuned per stock and foil: temperature, pressure, and dwell (~0.1–0.5 s). Very smooth stock (cast-coated paper) stamps best; textured stock causes an "orange-peel" defect. Often combined with embossing for a raised metallic relief.
