Corona treatment

making plastics printable and bondable

§ 01 · The short version

Corona treatment runs high-frequency high voltage between an electrode and a grounded roller, creating a plasma discharge that oxidizes the passing film surface and grafts on polar groups (hydroxyl, carbonyl, carboxyl). This lifts non-polar PP/PE from ~29–32 to 44–50 dyne/cm, sharply improving ink, coating, and adhesive wet-out. Key limit: the effect decays over days to weeks, so treatment is done inline right before printing or coating, not batched and stored; both sides are treated separately, targeting a treated surface energy of at least 38 dyne/cm.
