After die-cutting, the waste grid of facestock between labels — the matrix — is stripped off the web in one continuous web (weeding). Strip efficiency depends on shape complexity, liner weight, adhesive peel, and line speed; a matrix break stops the line. Slitting then cuts the wide printed web lengthwise into narrow rolls sized for the applicator or customer, and the slitter-rewinder also inspects, removes defects, and counts.
