How to apply vinyl decals with transfer tape
Clean the surface with isopropyl alcohol (never ammonia glass cleaner), then apply the decal by the dry method (hinge one edge, peel the backing, squeegee from the centre out) or the wet method (a drop of dish soap in water lets you slide and reposition before squeegeeing out the water and air). Let it dry fully, then peel the transfer tape back on itself at a low angle.
Applying a vinyl decal with transfer tape is a small trick of balanced stickiness. The design is cut on a paper backing; a sheet of transfer tape lifts the whole thing off that backing in one piece, holds every letter and shape in its exact place, lays them onto the surface, then peels away and leaves them behind. It works because the tack is tuned in layers, and every rule that follows is there to protect that order.

Step by step

Clean the surface
Wipe with isopropyl alcohol — never an ammonia-based glass cleaner, which leaves a film that stops the vinyl bonding. Apply between about 10–32 °C (50–90 °F).

Choose dry or wet
Dry is faster. The wet method — about 1 drop of dish soap per 500 ml (16 oz) of water — reduces tack so you can slide and reposition the decal, which helps on large pieces.

Hinge and position
Tape one edge down as a hinge, lift the paper backing, and lay the decal onto the surface from that edge.

Squeegee from the centre out
Press from the centre outward with firm, overlapping strokes, pushing air (and any water) toward the edges.

Dry, then remove the transfer tape
Let it dry — a few hours to overnight for the wet method — then peel the transfer tape back on itself at a low (~180°) angle, not straight away from the surface.
The tack hierarchy, and how to keep it in order
For the transfer to work, the stickiness has to climb in the right order. The transfer tape must grip the vinyl harder than the paper backing does, so the design lifts off the backing when you pull it away. But it must grip less than the vinyl’s own adhesive grips the surface, so the design stays down when the tape comes off. Anything that weakens the bond to the surface tips the balance the wrong way, so two rules carry the whole job. First, clean with isopropyl alcohol, never an ammonia glass cleaner, which leaves a film the vinyl cannot bond through. Second, let the decal dry and squeegee it down hard before the tape comes off. Then peel the tape back on itself, almost flat to the surface, not straight up: pulled straight up it takes the vinyl with it, while back-and-flat lets the surface keep it.
On a large decal the wet method buys room to aim. A single drop of dish soap in a spray of water briefly cuts the surface tack, so the whole design can slide into position before it commits. Squeegee the water and air out from the centre, give it longer to dry than a dry application — a few hours to overnight — then lift the tape.

Common questions
What is the wet method for vinyl decals?
You mist the surface with water containing a drop of dish soap, which temporarily reduces the adhesive’s tack so you can slide and reposition the decal before squeegeeing out the water and air. It is ideal for large decals.
Why does the transfer tape lift my vinyl instead of leaving it down?
Peel the transfer tape back on itself at a low ~180° angle, and make sure the decal is fully dry and well squeegeed down first. Pulling the tape straight up lifts the vinyl with it.
