Surface Preparation?

The single most common cause of adhesion failure is not the adhesive — it is what was on the surface underneath it. Clean, dry, room-temperature: three conditions that decide whether the label holds.

What it is

Surface preparation is the cleaning and conditioning of a container before a label goes on. It is unglamorous and routinely skipped, and it is the single most common cause of label adhesion failure. Before any label is applied, the target surface must be clean, dry, and at room temperature.

An adhesive can only bond to what it touches. Oils, fingerprints, dust, condensation, or mould-release agents sit between the adhesive and the substrate as a barrier — the label bonds to the contamination, not the container, and lifts.

How to do it

Isopropyl alcohol at 70% or higher is the recommended cleaner for most surfaces: it removes oils, fingerprints, dust, and light manufacturing residues without leaving its own residue, and it evaporates quickly. Apply it with a lint-free cloth — not paper towel, which leaves fibres — using a single-direction wipe rather than circles that redeposit contamination.

Glass and metal usually need one wipe. Plastic fresh from moulding warrants a second, because mould-release agents may be present. Then wait: never apply a label immediately after cleaning — let the surface dry completely, roughly 30–60 seconds for IPA, so the solvent has flashed off.

Temperature and timing

Cold surfaces weaken bonding. Most pressure-sensitive adhesives lose a large share of their initial tack below about 5 °C, and the standard minimum application temperature is around 10 °C. Label at room temperature, to a dry, clean surface, and let the bond set before the container is chilled — roughly 24 hours of cure before refrigeration, filling, or shipping is the safe practice on glass.

This applies even to non-refrigerated products: labels shipped in winter can arrive below their bonding temperature, so let the rolls acclimatise to room temperature before running them, or the cold-stiffened adhesive will not wet out the surface.

Trade-offs
— what to know

Prep cannot rescue the wrong adhesive. A spotless low-surface-energy plastic still needs an LSE-rated adhesive; a clean but oil-soaked surface in service still needs an oil-resistant grade. Preparation removes the barrier — it does not change the underlying surface chemistry.

Textured and porous surfaces need more than a wipe. On wood, concrete, or burlap the adhesive only meets the high points, so cleaning debris is necessary but not sufficient — a high-tack, flow-optimised adhesive is also required. On any surface with prior residue, test on the real container: a former label’s adhesive can block a new one from bonding.
