Why labels peel off — the real reasons, and the fix

Labels peel for a short list of predictable, avoidable reasons — almost none of them “bad glue”. The big ones: a dirty or oily surface, the wrong adhesive for a low-surface-energy plastic, too little application pressure, not letting the bond cure before handling, and heat, UV or condensation the adhesive was never chosen for. Fix the surface and match the adhesive, and most peeling disappears.

    A dirty or oily surface

    WhyAn adhesive bonds only to what it touches. Skin oil from bare hands, dust, mould-release or condensation sit between the adhesive and the surface, and the label lifts.

    FixWipe with 70%+ isopropyl alcohol on a lint-free cloth — twice for plastic fresh from moulding — and let it dry before applying.

    The wrong adhesive for the plastic

    WhyHDPE (~31 dyne/cm) and polypropylene (~29) sit below the ~36 a standard adhesive needs to wet the surface, so it never fully bonds.

    FixSpecify a low-surface-energy (LSE) high-tack adhesive, or corona/plasma-treat the surface to raise its energy.

  3. 03

    Not enough application pressure

    WhyA label put on too fast or too lightly traps air and leaves gaps — weak spots that lift into a peel.

    FixPress firmly and evenly across the whole label; a squeegee or credit card gives even pressure.

    No cure time before handling

    WhyA freshly applied label is at a fraction of its final bond. It needs roughly 24 hours (up to 48) to reach full strength.

    FixDo not ship, stack or stress labelled goods until the bond has cured.

    Rubber adhesive outdoors

    WhyRubber adhesive ages badly under UV and heat — often under 1–2 years — then lets go.

    FixUse a UV-stable acrylic adhesive for anything outdoor or long-term.

  6. 06

    Cold or wet application

    WhyCold stiffens the adhesive so it cannot wet the surface, and condensation blocks the bond entirely.

    FixApply at room temperature to a dry surface; let cold-shipped rolls acclimatise first.

    The wrong material for the environment

    WhyPaper wrinkles and lifts when wet; a stiff face flags off a tight curve; a hot-fill defeats BOPP.
