Why do my thermal labels fade?

That’s direct thermal — its heat-sensitive coating fades with sun and heat (a car dashboard kills it). For anything exposed to light, heat or chemicals, switch to thermal transfer with a resin ribbon, stable up to ~150 °C.

Does direct thermal need a ribbon?

No — direct thermal prints with no ribbon, which makes it cheaper and faster. Thermal transfer melts a wax, resin or hybrid ribbon onto the label for much greater durability (5+ years) at ~30–60% higher cost.

Which thermal label lasts longer?

Thermal transfer — 5+ years versus 6–12 months for direct thermal. Use direct thermal for short-life shipping labels and receipts; use thermal transfer for inventory, electronics and anything that must last.
