Best label for metal tins and cans
Bare metal is very high surface energy — aluminium sits around 840 dyne/cm — so adhesion is rarely the problem. Pick by durability instead. For retail tins and cans the best label is a BOPP or PET film with a permanent acrylic (metallized film if you want the silver look). For industrial drums and chemical containers, step up to a BS5609- or UL 969-certified label system, where the whole facestock-adhesive-ink-laminate stack is tested and certified together.

Beer, spirits and beauty where you want a bright silver metallic finish plus an oxygen/moisture barrier. Handles hot-fill (~85–95 °C); MetOPP flexes better around tight curves.
BS5609-certified system
Chemical drums and containers shipped by sea — BS5609 certifies a specific material-plus-ink-plus-printer combination through ~90 days of seawater immersion, salt spray and thermal cycling.
UL 969-certified system
Nameplates, warning and safety labels on UL-listed products — certifies the complete label system through thermal, humidity, UV, chemical and abrasion tests.

Metal makes adhesion easy — durability is the real question
Aluminium (~840 dyne/cm) and steel are far above the adhesion threshold, so almost any PSA grips. What varies is the environment: retail shelf, hot-fill line, chemical drum or outdoor equipment each demand a different film and finish. Choose the facestock for heat, chemicals and UV, not for stick.
Hot-fill and heat point to PET or metallized film
PET runs roughly −40 °C to +150 °C and resists most chemicals and solvents; metallized film handles hot-fill at 85–95 °C for juices and preserves. Both comfortably outlast paper on a metal container that gets hot, oily or chemically exposed.
Certification covers the whole system — and is fragile
BS5609 and UL 969 do not certify a facestock alone; they certify a complete combination of face, adhesive, ink, laminate and printer. Change the printer or ribbon and the certification is void. Confirm early whether your route and buyer actually require it — many do not.

BS5609 for chemical containers shipped by sea (marine GHS), UL 969 for durability/safety labels on UL-listed products. Both certify the entire label system, so lock in your printer and ribbon first — changing them voids the certification.
