Adhesive selection mistakes (why the wrong glue fails)

Most adhesive failures are the wrong grade, not bad glue: a standard adhesive on a low-energy plastic, permanent where you needed clean removal, rubber outdoors, or a room-temperature adhesive on a freezer or hot-fill product. Match the adhesive to the surface, the temperature, and how long it must hold.

  1. 01

A standard adhesive on low-energy plastic

WhyA generic permanent adhesive cannot wet HDPE or polypropylene, so the label lifts.

FixSpecify a low-surface-energy high-tack grade for those plastics.

  2. 02

Permanent where you need clean removal

WhyA permanent adhesive tears the face or leaves residue on a reusable or returnable container.

FixUse a removable or wash-off grade, and state the removal window when you order.

  3. 03

    Rubber adhesive outdoors

WhyRubber ages badly under UV and heat — 1–2 years before it lets go.

FixUse a UV-stable acrylic for outdoor, long-term or chemical exposure.

  4. 04

A room-temp adhesive on a cold or hot product

WhyA standard PSA stiffens below freezing and softens above ~120–150 °C.

FixFreezer-grade below −40 °C; high-temperature acrylic or silicone for heat and autoclave.

  5. 05

    Ignoring dwell and cure time

WhyA just-applied label is at a fraction of its bond, so stressing it early causes lifting.

FixLet the bond cure — roughly 24 hours — before handling or shipping.

  6. 06

    Assuming “removable” stays removable

WhyRemovable adhesion increases over time — a label removable after a week can leave residue after six months.

FixState the removal window, and test on the real substrate after realistic dwell.

Common questions

Why won’t my adhesive stick to plastic?

Because the plastic is low surface energy (HDPE ~31, PP ~29 dyne/cm) and the adhesive is a standard grade that cannot wet it. Switch to a low-surface-energy high-tack adhesive.

Does removable adhesive stay removable?

Not indefinitely — removable adhesion tends to increase over time, so a label removable after a week may leave residue after six months. State the removal window and test.
