The premium paper face. A mineral coating holds ink on the surface for razor-sharp type and photo-grade images — perfect for wine and perfume, useless once it gets wet without help.
What it is
Coated paper has a mineral coating — clay or calcium carbonate — calendered to a gloss or matte finish. The coating holds ink on the surface instead of letting it soak in, preventing dot gain so fine type and photo-grade images stay sharp (it supports roughly 200 lpi). It is the paper of choice for wine, perfume, and premium dry-goods labels.
Where it fits

Coated paper is not waterproof or abrasion-resistant on its own — it needs a lamination or varnish for any moisture exposure — and it is not suited to freezer or high-heat use. Reach for it when print quality and a paper feel matter and the environment is dry and indoor; reach for a film face (BOPP, PET, vinyl) the moment water, oil, or cold enter the picture.
