How to laminate labels and stickers

Laminating adds a clear film over the print for water, scuff, chemical and UV protection. Choose the finish — gloss for colour pop, matte for a low-glare premium look, soft-touch for a velvety feel — let printed ink dry about 24 hours first, then apply the laminate smoothly from the centre out. Cold lamination bonds at room temperature; hot lamination (~90 °C) bonds more firmly.

A laminate is a clear skin laid over the print, there to be the layer that takes the damage instead of the ink. Water, grit, sun and chemicals hit the film; the artwork underneath comes through untouched. It is also a one-way door: a laminate seals for good, so a laminate protects only what it seals well, and a bad seal can do more harm than none.

Step by step

    Choose the finish

    Gloss boosts colour and reflectivity; matte diffuses glare for an upscale, readable look; soft-touch adds a velvety premium feel used on beauty and spirits.

    Let the ink dry

    If you printed the label, let the ink dry about 24 hours before laminating so it does not smear under the film.

    Cold vs hot lamination

    Cold (self-adhesive) laminate bonds at room temperature and is safest for heat-sensitive stock; hot lamination (~90 °C) bonds more firmly.

    Apply from the centre out

    On a clean, lint-free surface, lay the laminate down and smooth from the centre outward so no air or dust is trapped underneath.

    Trim after laminating

    Trim or die-cut after laminating so the film seals over the print as much as possible.

Dry first, seal the edges, mind the heat

Because a laminate cannot be undone, every step is about getting it right before the film goes down. The ink has to be dry first — about twenty-four hours if you printed it yourself. Seal it while the solvent is still gassing off and it hazes the film from beneath, a cloudy bloom no pressure will clear; the same permanence traps a speck of dust or a bubble in plain sight, which is why the final pass is a slow smoothing from the centre outward on a clean, lint-free surface.

Then the edge, which is the whole game. Laminate and then trim, never the other way round, so the film seals down over the print instead of stopping at it — the edge is where water and wear get under a label. Even a perfect edge, though, will not waterproof a paper label: water wicks straight through the cut paper fibres, which is why true waterproofing starts with a film facestock, not a coating over paper. Last, match the temperature to the stock — cold self-adhesive laminate bonds at room temperature and is safe for anything heat-sensitive; hot lamination at around 90 °C bonds harder but warps stock that cannot take it.

Good to know

  • For real outdoor durability, a laminate over a film face plus UV-stable ink is the standard — PET laminate ~2–5 yr, cast PVC ~7 yr, fluoropolymer the top tier.
  • A laminate does not make a paper label truly waterproof — water still wicks in at the edges.
  • A thermal-transfer laminate can be over-printed later with variable data (dates, lot codes).
